ANNUAL report distinction and that in all cases they are men who but for the Evening Class arrangement would have been unable to offer themselves for Holy Orders The general advance of the whole Department is very satisfactory In this Depart- ment the College has to regret the loss of the services of the Chaplain and Censor the Eev Watkins formerly student of the Department who has been elected to the Wardenship of St Augustine's College Canterbury but is still able to retain his post as Professor of Logic and Moral Philosophy in this College Mr Watkins has discharged the duties of the Chaplaincy and Censorship for three years with the greatest ability devotion and success and the Principal has reported his decided opinion that the prosperity of the Department has been largely due to the services which he has thus rendered to the College Into his place the Council have elected the Eev Ball of Queen's College Oxford The number of the Associates of this Department is now 623 of whom 235 were placed in the First Class in their final Examination -The number of Students in the Department of General Literature and Science has very slightly advanced from 43 to 45 The Dean reports favourably of the working of the new plan introduced last year for slightly extending the curriculum of the Department and giving to Students greater freedom of choice among the subjects contained therein Without interfering with the work of the Department as school of liberal education it has he believes given increased facilities for preparation for the various Public Examinations which are now of growing importance In relation to this Department the Council deeply regret to announce the death of the Eev Brewer whose resignation of his Professorship after thirty-eight years of most valuable service to the College they had to receive last year By the subscriptions of his friends and old pupils Prize of 51 5s annual value has been founded to be called the
