52 ANNUAL REPORT Comparing this as usual with the list of 1878 it will be seen that the number of Matriculated Students has increased in the Theological Department the Department of General Literature and Science and the Medical Department and has diminished in the Department of Applied Sciences and Evening Class Department-the total number being 24 in advance of the hst of 1878 39 in advance of 1877 and 64 in advance of 1876 that the number of Occasional Students has increased by 17 and that the number of boys in the School has diminished by 24 from the list of 1878 which was unusually large The whole number under instruction is therefore about 17 in advance of the list of last year- the increase in the College being partly counterbalanced by the decrease in the School-and 44 in advance of the list of 1877 To these however are to be added certain other Classes held under the auspices of the College but not formally attached to its regular system Civil Service Classes Evening Class in Workshop Gilbart Banking Lectures Total 835 The total here is 190 in advance of the corresponding Classes of last year -The Theological Department again shows an increase from 65 to 71 and now probably stands higher in respect of those actually attending the Department as distinct from the Class of Candidates than at any previous time of its existence The Evening Branch of this Department has slightly increased from 12 to 15 and is working very satisfactorily although the numbers are in comparison with the Morning Classes smaller than might have been expected It has this year supplied its first contingent of Third year Students to the Morning Classes Of these the Principal reports that all are likely to pass with credit and some with 400 25 410
