WORKSHOP EVENING CLASSES 355 encouraged to make for themselves Lathes and small Engines up to five or seven inches diameter of Cylinder They are also made acquainted with the construction of modern Land and Marine Engines and the practical use of the Indicator SMITH WORK Students are taught to make and temper Chisels Drills and Turning tools to weld Iron aid Steel and to produce light forgings This shop is provided with two Forges and well-selected stock of Tools CASTING IN BRASS AND IRON The Foundry is furnished with Cupola two Brass Furnaces two Drying-stones and other suitable appointments for complete course of instruction in Foundry work and for producing the lighter class of Castings The Classes are conducted by Mr David Walker Super- intendent of the College Workshop who has had fifteen years' practical experience as Foreman in the employ of Messrs Maudsley Sons and Field He is assisted by skilled workmen in each department Prize of £5 in Cash or in Books is given every year by the Clothworkers' Company at the close of the Summer Session to the Student who has worked for the three pre- ceding Terms in the Workshop during the evening and has exhibited the greatest proficiency The hours of attendance are from 30 to on Tuesday and Friday evenings Fees £2 2s per term of about twelve weeks payable in advance in the College office Further information may be obtained from the Superin- tendent at the Workshop
