annual report 65 about £3 000 was contributed as memorial of the late Robert Cheere so long Treasurer of the Hospital The Committee have been able to arrange for lease of 99 years of the old West Herts Infirmary at Hemel Hempstead at rent of £150 per annum The building is admirably adapted for the purpose and requires but little alteration It is calculated that after payment of the expense of alteration repairs and furniture the sum contributed will be sufficient at satisfactory investment to yield sum at least equal to the annual rent It is hoped that the Home may be open in May Its maintainance will entail additional cost on the Hospital but it is fully believed that the increase of its usefulness will lead to such an increase of subscriptions as may counterbalance this increase of burden No progress has been made towards the erection of College Hall referred to in the last Report But the want of sufficient accommodation for Students desiring to reside under the direction of the College-never more felt than during the past year-has been brought by the General Board before the attention of the Council and it is still hoped that some steps may be found possible towards supplying this need The financial position of the College shows decided im- provement over that of 1876 the receipts being £382 13 Sd in excess of expenditure as against £78 Is 8d in the pre- ceding year The Council have credited this amount to the Deferred Building Account with the view of cancelling further portion of the large sum still due for the Buildings erected in 1874 The Council are continually receiving most earnest applications from the Staff both of the College and of the School for an increased number of Class-rooms and they have felt compelled lately to give consideration to the most pressing of these wants No definite plans have yet been matured but it is hoped that some efforts for meeting the existing pressure will be made during the ensuing Summer Ε
