annual report 63 Aitken Appointment by Examination in the Civil Service Annoot Appointment by Examination in the Bank of England Garrard Simons Appointments by Examination in the Guardian Fire and Life Assurance Company As regards the Oxford and Cambridge School Examina- tion the Report was generally very satisfactory Out of 20 Candidates 14 were successful in obtaining Certificates Of these obtained distinction in Greek in Latin in Divinity in History in English in Physical Geography and Geology As compared with the results obtained by other great Schools King's College School stood first in Divinity second in Greek and was bracketed second in English Two points call for special notice the increase in the number of boys in the Middle School learning Greek and ii the establishment of Preliminary Scientific Ciass The increase of boys learning Greek in the Middle School is very marked In the Lower School the subjects studied are Divinity Latin English and French On leaving this Division boy is allowed subject to the wishes of his parents or guardians to select either Greek or German according as he intends to proceed up the Classical or the Modern Side of the School Until lately theproportion of those who selected theGerman Language far exceeded those who preferred to take up Greek but during the last year there has been very perceptible change and now in the Middle School 95 are reading Greek preparatory to going up the Classical Side of the Upper School The Preliminary Scientific Class has been established in accordance with the advice of the authorities of the University of London that the Preliminary Scientific Exami- nation should be passed by Students before entering one of the Medical Schools of the Metropolis Designed for those who intend to offer themselves for the
