ANNUAL REPORT 55 -The work of the Department of Applied Sciences calls for no special remark It has gone on during the past year vigorously and successfully The number of Students remains much as before at standard higher than has been previously reached and its reputation as an Engineering School has been fully maintained -In the Medical Department the total number of Matriculated Students varies little from that of last year being 121 but there has been satisfactory increase in the entries of new Students the number having risen from 32 in 1876-77 to 46 in the present year-a number which is noted by the Dean as exceeding that of any year since he first took office now more than sixteen years ago This increase fully bears out the anticipations expressed in the report of last year and the Dean has again expressed his belief that satisfactory as the rise in the number of new Students has been during 1877-78 it is likely to be even more satisfactory next year and that the Medical Department will soon number as many Students as it did in its most flourishing days The following are few of the more important distinctions which have been gained by Students during the past year at the University of London At the Second Examination Tirard Nestor Scholarship and Gold Medal in Obstetric Medicine Scholarship and Gold Medal in Forensic Medi- cine and Honours in Medicine Barrow Alburt Botce Honours in Obstetric Medicine Sedgefield Arthur Honours in Obstetric Medicine and Honours in Forensic Medicine The lamented death of Professor Sir Fergusson Bart rendered necessary some important changes in the Surgical Staff of the College and Hospital Professor John Wood became Senior Surgeon and was promoted to the vacant
