54 ANNUAL REPORT In this Department the Council have received with regret but without surprise the resignation of the Chair of English Literature by Professor Brewer after period of service to the College of no less than 38 years They have felt it due to him to place on record their sense of the value of his services in the following resolution Resolved that the Council cannot receive Professor Brewer's resignation without expressing their sineere regret that his removal from residence in London has obliged him to resign taat place on the Academical Staff which he has now held to the great benefit of the College for no less than thirty-eight years and their deep sense of the invaluable services rendered by him first as Classical Lecturer and subsequently as Pro- fessor of English Literature and History not only by his high literary reputation reflecting lustre on the Institution which he has served but also by his admirable teaching his high moral influence and his cordial sympathy and cooperation with all that could advance the principles and the work of the College Into the place thus vacated they have had great pleasure in electing Mr Hales formerly Fellow of Christ's College Cambridge and 4th in the First Class of the Classi- cal Tripos in 1859 who has already done good service as Lecturer to the School and has established by his works high reputation in the subject of English Literature The following is the List of Distinctions gained by Students of this Department during this last year Anderson Η Shaw Indian Civil Service Tweedy Van Sommer Matrie Univer of London 5th place Prinsep Admission to Woolwich Milner Craven Scholar Oxford Gell Arnold Essay Oxford Warren 1st Class Moral Science Cambridge Trustram James McJIahon Law Scholarship Cambridge
