52 ANNUAL REPORT Evening Class Department has remained almost exactly the same in the Department of Applied Science and has slightly diminished in the Medical Department presenting on the whole an increase of 15 on the list of 1877 and of 40 on the list of 1876 the number of Occasional Students re- mains almost exactly the same in the Morning Classes and has diminished considerably in the Evening Classes the number of boys of the School has largely increased and now stands higher than at any previous time The whole number under instruction is 43 in advance of the list of last year To this list is to be added as usual certain Classes held in connexion with the Evening Class Department although not technically belonging to its regular system Class for preparation for Home Civil Service 350 Workshop Class 35 Gilbart Lecftures on Banking 260 Special Course on Banking by Mr Macleod 400 Total 045 -The Theological Department again shows large and encouraging increase the numbers having risen from 45 to 65 and being now more than double the numbers of 1876 This increase is marked both in the Morning and Evening Classes the former having risen from 39 to 52 and the latter from to 13 The experiment therefore of the Evening Class system in this Department has reacted most satisfactorily on the prosperity of the Department as whole In itself it has been certainly successful The character and attainments of the Evening Students are entirely satisfactory in no respect falling below the standard of the Morning Classes The one difficulty which seems to present itself is the strain of so systematic course of study on those who are already engaged actively during the day in various forms of professional work This cannot be reme- died except by lowering of the standard of requirement
