358 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES ton 3s Histoire de Charles XII Surenne's edition Simp- kin Is 6d Books recommended -Johnstons Spelling Book Johnston's Tots Davidson and Aleock's Crammar Allman 2s Tod- hunter's Euclid Macmillan 3s 6a Philips' First School Atlas Curtis's Outlines of Geography Inquiries respecting this Class should be addressed to the Secretary King's College or to Mr Walke 23 Heaton Road Peckham Rye Examinations are held annually in May for about 50 Studentships Candidates must be between 14 and 16 Successful candidates are required to pay the Admiralty £25 per year for the first three years of their training but this money is returned in small weekly payments Board and lodging are provided gratuitously and the students are educated free of expense After six years' training they are appointed Assistant Engineers and pass through course of higher instruction at the Royal Naval College Greenwich Full pay including allowances -Assistant Engineers first year £137 next three or four years £164 per year Assistants then become Engineers with £191 rising to £228 At about the age of 35 they become Chief Engineers with £264 rising to £429 As vacancies occur Chief Engineers are appointed Inspectors of' Machinery with £480 to £600 Chief Engineers and some Engineers are also paid charge money £20 to £90 per year After about thirty years' service an Engineer Officer who has been promoted in the usual course can secure retirement of from £400 to £450 per year Inspectors of Machinery rank with Captains in the Navy and Colonels in the Army GENERAL INFORMATION All Fees are payable in advance in the College Office They will be received any day between ten and four except on Saturday when the Office closes at two or on the first two evenings of each period during the hour previous to the opening of the Class
