354 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES SECOND CLASS ASSISTANTS OF EXCISE MR WOOD Each course of preparation is commenced about weeks after the preceding examination and lasts until the following examination Its average duration is 18 weeks There will be three admissions-at the beginning of the course weeks later and 12 weeks later Fee for the course £1 18s 6d for the first 12 weeks £1 5s from the second admission to the end £1 10s from the third admission to the end period uncertain at the rate of 17s 6d for weeks The class meets on Friday Evenings from 45 to 30 The scheme of examination is as follows Obligatory Hand- writing highest marks attainable 400 Orthography 400 Arithmetic to Vulgar and Decimal Fractious 400 English Composition 400 Optional Higher Arithmetic including Mensuration Square and Cube Root &c400 Geography especially that of the British Isles 400 Students joining this Class at the commencement of the course should have some acquaintance with Vulgar and Decimal Fractions Proportion and Interest students joining at the second admission should have some acquaintance with all the rules of Arithmetic The competition for the Excise being very great arrange- ments are made to enable students to join an extra class for the most important subjects those who are not well acquainted ith all the ordinary rules of Arithmetic are strongly recom- mended to avail themselves of this provision Book required -Barnard Smith's Arithmetic Books recommended -Sullivan's Spelling Book Superseded Johnston's Civil Service Spelling Book Ryan's Civil Service Examination Papers Johnston's Civil Service Tots Abbott's "How to Write Clearly" Anderson's Class Book of Geo- grapby Philips' First School Atlas Hunter's Elements of Mensuration Longmans
