CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 353 This class is divided into two sections-the first section to contain the more advanced students The course of pre- paration is similar in both sections and students may prepare for the next examination in either On joining the class students will be examined and placed in the section that will give them the more suitable help Those assigned to the second will be moved to the first when sufficiently advanced The first section meets on Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 45 to 15 The second section meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 45 to 15 Books required -Barnard Smith's Arithmetic Macmillan is 6d Johnston's Civil Service Precis Longmans 3s 6c Hunter's Examination Questions in Book-keeping with Answers Longmans 2s 6d Hamilton and Ball's Book- keeping Oxford Clarendon Press 2s Books recommended -Sullivan's Spelling Book Superseded Longmans Is 4d Johnston's Civil Service Spelling Book Longmaus Is 3c Johnston's Civil Service Tots Longmans Is Abbott's How to Write Clearly" Seeley Is 6d An- derson's Class Book of Geography Nelson Is 9c Philips' First School Atlas Is Curtis's Outh'nes of English History Simpkin 6d Boss's Outlines of English History Simpkin 2s 6d Student's Hume Murray 7s &d Inquiries respecting this class should be addressed to the Secretary King's College or to Mr Braginton Claren- don Villas Barry Road Peckham Rye Candidates for these Clerkships which are mostly in Lon- don must be between 17 and 20 Men Clerks of the Lower Division rise from £80 to £200 by triennial increments of £15 The most competent of them receive extra pay not exceeding £100 They may after ten years' service be pro- moted exceptionally to the Higher Division They will of course be eligible for the open competitions for the Higher Division at any time if between the limits of age prescribed for it and the upper limit is extended in favour of persons already in the service ζ
