general literature and science 113 The Mathematical subjects are Euclid Books II Arith- metic and Elementary Algebra including simple Equations The examination in Classics will be in Grammar and in passages to be translated from Standard Greek and Latin authors also an easy passage for translation from English into Latin prose II One Exhibition of £40 and two of £30 all given by the College and one of £20 given by Freake Esq will be awarded to the Students who pass the best examination on entering this Department in October 1878 provided they are under seventeen years of age on the day Term begins The Freake Exhibition will also be open to those who joined the College at Easter of this year See page 127 III The regular work of the Term will begin on Thursday October Thursday January 16 and Thursday April 24 on which days all old Students are required to be present at 10 unless special leave of absence is obtained beforehand from the Principal IV The Council require that Half-term's notice be given to the Secretary in writing of the removal of Student from the College This notice must be given before the close of the first hall of the Term in which Student is to leave and if not so given the payment of Half-term Fees will be required In 1878-9 the Half-terms will end on Saturday November 16 Friday February 28 and Saturday May 31 The Students received into this Department are- Matriculated Students or those admitted to the regular and full prescribed course of study Each Candidate for Matriculation must produce testi- monial of good character from his last instructor and when Η
