350 CIVIL 8ERVICE EVENING CLASSES completing their nineteenth year After two years' service they will be eligible to compete among themselves for certain number of Men Clerkships of the Lower Division They are of course eligible for the open competitions for Men Clerkships at any time if between the limits of age prescribed SECOND CLASS ASSISTANTS OF EXCISE JOHN WOOD Each course of preparation is commenced about weeks after the preceding examination and lasts until the following examination Its average duration is 18 weeks There will be three admissions-at the beginning of the course weeks later and 12 weeks later Fee for the course £1 18s Gd for the first 12 weeks £1 5s from the second admission to the end £1 10s from the third admission to the end period uncertain at the rate of 17s Gd for weeks The class meets on Friday Evenings from 45 to 30 The scheme of examination is as follows Obligatory Hand- writing highest marks attainable 400 Orthography 400 Arithmetic to Vulgar and Decimal Fractious 400 English Composition 400 Optional Higher Arithmetic including Mensuration Square and Cube Root &c 400 Geography especially that of the British Isles 40O Students joining this Class at the commencement of the course should have some acquaintance with Vulgar and Decimal Fractions Proportion and Interest students joining at the second admission should be well acquainted with these ratal and should have some acquaintance with Discount and Stocks students joining at the third admission should have some acquaintance with all the rub8 of Arithmetic The competition for the Excse being very great student are advised to attend the Extra Class Book required -Barnard Smith's Arithmetic
