ANNUAL REPORT ii reflected lustre not only on his own name but on the College to which he belonged died in October last Iu token of the deep interest which he still took in the scientific work of King's College he bequeathed to it most valuable and interesting collection of scientific apparatus considerable library of scientific books and sum of £500 to be spent iu the improvement of its educational machinery for the teaching of experimental science The Council accepted with much gratitude and with peculiar pleasure this most valuable be- quest They have caused gallery to be erected in George the Third's Museum for the reception of the apparatus and provided separate cases for the books It is proposed to call the collection the Wheatstone Collection in order at once to perpetuate in connection with the College name of which it may be justly proud and to record their hearty acknowledgment of the kindly feeling towards the College to which it owes this liberal and interesting bequest During the same year another member of the original staff of the Institution has passed away The Kev Dr Major for thirty-six years Head Master of the School who retired on pension of £300 year in 1866 died in February last The Council cannot refrain on this occasion from acknowledging once more the long conscientious and devoted service which he rendered to the School and which has borne its natural fruit in the grateful and affectionate remembrance of many generations of scholars In token of their appreciation of that service they have directed Memorial Tablet to be put up in the Chapel in which tablets to the memory of Sir Edwardes and Dr Anstie former members of the College have also been erected by private friends during the past year The Council have to refer in the next place to the Special Fund raised in order to clear off the debt which has so long hampered the action of the College They announce with the greatest satisfaction that the required sum of £11 000 referred to in the last Report has now been raised and that the Rev Wigram has accordingly paid his munificent donation of £1 000 given in testimony of his
