Cr2 ANNUAL REPORT Fisher Caldwell Davies Taylor Certificate of Approval at the Pre- liminary Apothecaries' Examination Michell From this list it is satisfactory to gather that an increasing number of boys are yearly offering themselves for the London University Matriculation Examination and that those who enter the various Departments of King's College sustain the high reputation of the School and succeed in obtaining many of the chief Prizes and Certificates The Council cannot conclude this portion of their Report without adverting with much gratification to the very satis- factory reports received from the Principal the Deans of the various Departments of the College and the Head Master of the good conduct the spirit of work and the general progress of the Students and Boys of the School II In passing to the special events of the past year the Council have to announce with deep regret the removal by death from the list of Life Governors of the honoured name of Sir John Taylor Coleridge one of the earliest supporters of the College and since the year 1841 member of the Council To fill the vacancy thus caused the Archbishop of Canterbury has appointed the Marquis of Salisbury one of the members of the Council They have also to regret the loss from their own number of an active and energetic col- league in Mr Thomas Webster For the vacancies caused by his death and by the election of Lord Salisbury to the office of Life Governor they beg to submit to the Court the name of General Sir Wilbraham Vice-Chairman of the Hospital and Leaf Esq former pupil of the School During the past year the College has also lost one of the most distinguished of its Teachers Sir Charles Wheatstone who from 1834 to 1875 held the Professorship of Experi- mental Philosophy and whose brilliant scientific achievements
