56 ANNUAL REPORT proved himself an efficient teacher in Dublin and had done good scientific work in Physiology has been appointed to the Chair of Physiology Dr Johnson who has filled the Chair of Medicine with distinguished success and efficiency since the year 1862 having been obliged to retire from that appointment in consequence of the increased demand upon his time from private practice the Council have appointed as his successor Dr Lionel Smith Boale who has been so long and honourably connected with the College as Professor of Physiology and Professor of Pathology The Council have taken the opportunity thus afforded by Dr Johnson's retirement from the Chair of Medicine to form new Chair of Clinical Medicine and they have had much gratification in appointing thereto Dr Johnson as the First Professor They confidently believe that this new appoint- ment will materially increase the efficiency of Clinical teaching at King's College Hospital Mr Cartwright the Professor of Dental Surgery and Dental Surgeon to King's College Hospital having retired after being connected with the College and Hospital for more than thirty years the Council have appointed as his successor Mr Samuel Hamilton Cartwright who has already done excellent service as Assistant-Dental Surgeon and to mark their appreciation of the great services rendered by Mr Cartwright during his long connexion with the College and Hospital they have elected him an Honorary Fellow Dr Joseph Henry Philpot having retired from the offices of Medical Tutor and Sub-Dean the Council have appointed Mr Francis Richardson Cross former distin- guished Student of the College as his successor -The last Session of the Evening Classes has been in every way most successful one Most of the Classes have increased and it is satisfactory to note that such increase has taken place alike in the Classes devoted to Literature Science and Art The Council learn with much gratification that while the Classes are chiefly attended by Students engaged in various commercial pursuits there are many who
