ANNUAL report 53 young men engaged in various professions who are desirous of entering Holy Orders but unable to give up for so long period as two years the work by which they maintain them- selves The Theological Board recommended that an option be given to Students of taking three years' course during the first two years of which instruction shall be given in the evening so that it will be necessary to give up other occu- pation only during the last year of their study The Council finding that this proposal commended itself to the approval of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and of the Bishops of London Winchester and Rochester have resolved to try the system as an experiment beginning in October next They trust that it may do something to meet the present acknow- ledged difficulty of obtaining sufficient number of well- qualified Candidates for Holy Orders and at the same time extend the advantages of the Theological Department to larger number of Students The whole number of its Associates is now 583 of whom 220 were placed in the First Class at the Final Examination -The ordinary work of the Department of General Literature and Science calls for no special remark The number of Students has varied but little its average during the year past having been 52 It is still lower than the Council would wish to see it but that the teaching and work of the Department continue to be excellent is shown by the career of its Students at the Universities and in various professions To this Department in particular the advantage of tho affiliation to the Universities already proposed by the Council and still under consideration would bo very considerable The chief honours gained by the Students during the past year are as follows Gell Philip Lyttleton 1st Class in History Oxford Trustram James 1st Class in Law Cambridge Bishop William Chattebley 7th Wrangler Cambridge Jude Richard Henry 18th Wraugler Cambridge Fisher Arthur Thomas 26th Wrangler Cambridge
