52 annual report On comparing this list with the list of 1875 it will be seen that the number of Matriculated Students has increased iu the Department of Applied Sciences and Evening Classes and diminished in the other departments the number of Occa- sional Students has increased in the Evening and diminished in the Morning Classes the number of boys in the School has increased The whole number under instruction is 42 less than last year and stands almost exactly as in 1874 To this list however must now be added certain other classes taught in the Evening under the sanction and direction of the College though not as yet included in the regular system of the Evening Classes These are- Class for preparation for Home Civil Ser- -The Theological Department has to the great regret of the Council diminished in number its average during the past year having been 29 This diminution of numbers which has gone on progressively for several years is certainly not due to any failure of ability or industry in the Teaching Staff or to any falling off in the standard of the character aud attainments of the Students It must be attributed to the severer competition to which the Department is now exposed partly by the establishment and continued growth of the Class of Unattached Students at the Universities partly by the creation of Theological Colleges in London and elsewhere which having Endowments to fall back upon are able to receive Students at lower fees than those of King's College This subject has during the past year received the anxious consideration both of the Theological Board and of the Council At the same time their attention has been drawn to the fact that numerous applications are received from vice Workshop Class Gilbart Lectures on Banking 172 30 485 Total 687
