62 ANNUAL REPORT Wigram on condition that an additional £3 000 should be raised before the end of the year 1874 to complete this most important undertaking The hope expressed in the Report of 1874 that the whole of this sum would be raised before the end of the year has not been entirely realized Thanks however to the exertions of the Principal and some members of the Staff the sub- scription has now been brought within £500 of the sum required and as Sir Wigram has been so good as to extend the time assigned to the end of 1875 they cannot but hope that before that time the additional sum will be raised and this important matter brought to successful issue The Council have pleasure in announcing that in addition to the gift from Sir Joseph Whitworth referred to above they have during the past year received from the Worship- ful Company of Clothworkers an intimation that the Court will grant each year an Exhibition of £'20 tenable for two years to commence in October next It has been arranged under the advice of the General Board that this Exhibition should be granted for proficiency in Physical Science for which the College has hitherto been unable to offer any Scholarship or Exhibition The warmest thanks of the Council are due to the Company for thus liberally using their resources for the improvement of scientific education Passing on to the proposal for affiliation of the College to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge which was re- ferred to in the last Report the Council greatly regret that for the present at any rate the project is rejected by the authorities of the University of Oxford letter has been received from the Vice-Chancellor stating that the Heb- domadal Council have given long and careful consideration to the proposals submitted to them by the Council of King's College on the 5th of June last and regret that the diffi- culties which present themselves are such as to render it inexpedient in their opinion to propose measure to Con- vocation to meet the wishes of King's College From the University of Cambridge no answer has yet been received
