ANNUAL REPORT ג5 against 484 in 1872 The Council have every reason to believe that these classes continue to discharge very important educational function and they desire to express their acknowledgment to the teachers who conduct the work with so much zeal and success They have pleasure in announcing that the Gilbart Course of Lectures established in connection with this Department have been under the auspices of Professor Leone Levi even more successful than last year It is also with great satisfaction that they have to record the gift of £10 for Special Law Prize from the present Lord Chancellor and the continuance of the Prizes given in former years by James Duncan Esq Η Matheson Esq by the Trustees of Mr Gilbart's will and the London Joint Stock Bank Such Prizes are not only great boon to the Students but are signs of the high appreciation of the work of the Evening Classes by those who are able to judge of its character and its results -The School has again exhibited rapid increase of numbers from 456 to 521-a larger number than has at any former time been found upon its roll The Council have reason to know that the teaching the discipline and the tone of the School have entirely kept pace with its numerical prosperity and they cannot but express their warmest acknowledgments to the Masters of the School generally and especially to the Head Master to whose unwearied energy ability and power to command the confidence and sympathy of his Colleagues and the attachment and respect of the boys these results are due The increase of numbers is perceptible in all three Depart- ments and the Council observe with satisfaction that the number of young boys who have recently joined is unusually great The Head Master has thought it well to make fresh division of the School to create Middle School under the charge of Mr Rust the Master of the Lower School sub- divided like the Upper School into Classical and Modern Department two new Masterships have been created and פ
