annual report 47 As compared with the List of 1872 it will be observed that in the College the number of Matriculated and Occasional Students has slightly diminished in the Morning Classes and considerably increased in the Evening Classes The number of Boys in the Schcol shows an increase of no less than 65 The whole number under instruction has increased by 115 Α -The Theological Department is one of those which has slightly diminished The diminution is probably due partly to the increase in the number of Theological Colleges some of which are partially endowed partly to the continued growth of the Class of unattached Students at Oxford and Cambridge But the work of the Department has been very satisfactory during the past year the standard of the Asso- ciateship has been strictly maintained and the Students who have gone in for the various Ordination Examinations have generally stood well and have frequently been distinguished The number of certificated Associates now amounts to 548 of whom 206 were placed in the First Class at the Final Examination -The Department of General Literature and Science numbers 64 Students of whom 45 belong to the Classical and 19 to the Modern Department The work of this Department calls for no special remark it has gone on with complete efficiency and the reports of the regularity and industry of the Students are entirely satisfactory But the Dean and Professors remark that in many cases the standard of knowledge attained by Candidates for admission to the Department is very low and uhile they are unwilling to exclude any who show real desire to profit by their teaching they feel that this want of proper preparation is serious drawback to the success of their work The list of honours gained by former Students is exceedingly satisfactory including an Ireland University Scholarship and the first Balliol Scholarship at Oxford and high places in the Mathematical and Classical Triposes at Cambridge
