ANNUAL REPORT 49 -In the Medical Department the Council have plea- sure in announcing an increase in the number of Students from 141 to 154 the new entries being six in excess of those in 1871 and thirteen in excess of those in 1870 The pre- sent year is more prosperous than any of the last ten years and the progressive increase in the number of Students is very satisfactory The following are the chief honours gained during the past year At the University of London At the Examination John Curnow obtained the Gold Medal annually awarded to the most distinguished graduate of the year At the Second Examination Robert Wishart Lyell obtained Honours in Medicine Obstetrics apd Forensic Medicine At the University of Edinburgh Urban Pritchard obtained the Ettles Prize annually awarded to the most distinguished student of the year The Council note with pleasure that at the Universities of London and Edinburgh the most distinguished graduates of the year were Students of King's College On the recommendation of the Medical Board the Council have decided to create Professorship of Psychological Medi- cine and they have appointed as the first Professor Dr Edgar Sheppard former distinguished Student of the College and now holding highly responsible appointment at Colney Hatch Asylum Arrangements are now in progress for the delivery of Course of Lectures on Psychological Medicine at the College during the approaching Summer and for afford- ing opportunities to the Senior Students of King's College to visit the wards of Colney Hatch Asylum under the direction of their Professor The Council anticipate much advantage to the Medical School from the opening to the Students of this new department of practice The Council have received with much regret during the past year the resignations of Dr Guy and Dr Priestley
