58 ANNUAL REPORT They are therefore very anxious to urge this year the raising of the Special Fund referred to in their last Report The great general pressure caused by the European War and by the exertions for Elementary Education last year was such that they felt it undesirable to risk failure by attempting to bring it forward at that time The subscribers who had made their donations conditional on the raising of 15 000 before January 1871 have extended the term to January 1872 The Council believe that the time is now more favourable and they earnestly press upon the Proprietors the great im- portance of this attempt to rescue the College from its pecuniary difficulties It will be seen from the Report that fresh addition to the buildings of the College is absolutely necessary and yet difficult to carry out And generally it is obvious that these difficulties greatly cripple its energies and often oblige the Council to decline undertakings which they would gladly welcome They are convinced from what they see of the working of the College and the ability and energy of its staff that it only needs the removal of these difficulties to continue and to advance in its career of useful service to God and to man
