ANNUAL REPORT 57 the foundation of Scholarships and Prizes in whatever way the Council shall deem most useful They have to report that with view to add to the body of Proprietors those who will naturally be most interested in the welfare of the College they have determined as far and as soon as possible to apportion any shares placed at their disposal to Honorary Fellows to be held for life and after- ward to revert to the College In so doing they believe that they have taken step very acceptable to the staff and likely to conduce to the advantage of the Institution The Council have since the last Court added the following names to the list of Honorary Fellows viz William Henry Mahoney Christie formerly Pupil of the School Fourth Wrangler 1868 Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge Marmadiike Alexander Lawson formerly Student of the Medical Department and now Professor of Botany in the University of Oxford Rev Henry Parry Liddon formerly in the School now Canon of St Paul's Rev James Gylby Lonsdale late Professor of Classical Literature Henry Hyde Salter formerly Student of the Medical Department and now Senior Physician of Charing Cross Hospital Rev Henry White formerly Student of the Theological Depart- ment afterwards Censor and now Chaplain ol the House of Commons John Wood formerly Student of the Medical Department for nine years Demonstrator of Anatomy and now Professor of Surgery The financial state of the College although improved is still unsatisfactory It has been necessary to levy tax of per cent on all salaries during the present year to provide the 500 surplus for the extinction of the debt This is only half the sum required last year but still the Council feel that any tax on salaries already low is most undesirable
