50 annual report The Demonstratorship of Natural Philosophy has been vacated after year of most efficient service by Mr Bottomley appointed to higher office in the University of Glasgow and the Council have appointed Mr Herbert Tom- linson late Student of Christ Church Oxford to the post In connexion with the Department of Applied Sciences and the Medical Department the Council have to announce with deep regret the loss of Dr Miller loss which will be felt by the scientific world generally but especially in the College to which his teaching and influence were mainly devoted They would here put on record the resolution passed by them immediately after the death of Dr Miller believing that it expresses the feeling not only of the Council but of all member3 and friends of the College That the Council cannot receive the intelligence of the death of Professor Miller without expressing their strong sense of the invaluable services rendered by him to the College for thirty years as Demonstrator and Professor of Chemistry by his high scientific reputation by his able and effective teaching by his constant devotion to the special work of his chair and the general welfare of the whole insti- tution and by an example of high principle and Christian character The following distinctions have been gained during the past year university of London Honours at First Sc Examination John Landor Lowe in Experimental Physics Robekt Forsyth Scott in Mathematics and Mechanical Philosophy University of Cambridge Elwes Natural Science Exhibition at St John's College 1870 and Natural Science Scholarship value Ā£70 at Christ's College 1871 In the Medical Department the total number of students is 141 as against 138 in the last year the new entries in 1870 having been seven in excess of those in 1869
