annual report 47 -The Theological Department is one of those which manifests slight advance in numbers During the past year it has included few graduates taking advantage of the privilege of shortened course accorded to them in 1869 and the Council hope that this class of Students will increase In other respects the Department has simply continued its course of usefulness and maintained its high place among Theological Colleges The number of its certificated Asso- dates now amounts to 517 of whom 199 were placed in the First Class at the final Examination -The Department of General Literature and Science has increased both its Matriculated and its Occa- sional Students This increase is partly due to the creation of the Modern division referred to in the last Report The students of that Division already amount to about thirty per cent of the whole number in the Department and the Council believe it likely that this course of study which by uniting English and other Modern Languages with Mathe- matics Physical Science and Drawing gives fair repre- sentation of the various elements of Liberal Education and meets an acknowledged need of the present day will attract still larger number of Students The Council have appointed the Rev Mayor late Fellow and Tutor of St John College Cambridge 2nd Classic in 1851 to the Classical Professorship vacant by the resignation of Professor Lonsdale They are glad to acknow- ledge the great zeal and ability with which Professor Mayor has thrown himself into the teaching and organization of the Department and anticipate with pleasure the valuable results which must reward his exertions for the College In this Department steps are being taken to connect the teaching more closely with the work of preparation for the Examina- tions of the University of London without relinquishing that connexion with the older Universities in which the College has so long done important and honourable service Some more special reference is also being made to the Examination for the Indian Civil Service and similar Government Examina-
