50 annual report forced to resign his office in King's College and the Council have nominated Mr Bottomley the Demon- strator of Chemistry to supply his place The Professorship of Mathematics of which the vacancy was announced in the last Report is of the greatest con- sequence both to the General and Applied Science Depart- ments The Council appointed to the vacant office the Rev Drew late Mathematical Master of Blackheath Proprietary School and well known as most successful teacher Even during the short time which has elapsed Professor Drew by his energy and power both of teaching and organization has fully justified their choice and given them full confidence in the future of the Mathematical teach- ing under his charge -The Medical Department numbers 138 Students against 140 in the last year In other respects the progress of the Department has been entirely satisfactory The following are the principal honours gained by Students of this Department during the past year At the University of London At the Preliminary Science Examination Mr Gerald Bomford and Mr Andrew Duncan obtained Honours at the Second Examination Mr Evan Buchanan Baxter obtained the Scholarship and Gold Medal in Medicine and the Gold Medal in Midwifery and at the First Mr Thomas Csawfoud Hayes obtained Honours in Anatomy and in Organic Che- mistry &c and Mr Francis Warner in Organic Chemistry &e At the University of Edinburgh At the Bachelor of Medicine and Master in Surgery Examination Mr Georoe Amsden passed with First Class Honours and obtained the position of being the most distinguished gra- duate of the year at this Examination At Apothecaries Hall Mr Blyth obtained the Silver Medal and Prize for Botany
