annual report 49 the especial benefit of the Students of the Theological and General Departments Of Mr Mozley's high qualifications for the task there can be but one opinion and the Council have reason to believe that this addition to the studies of the College will prove valuable in itself and especially season- able at the present time -That the Department of the Applied Sciences has slightly diminished in numbers will surprise no one who is aware of the present depression of some of the professions which it more especially serves In other respects it pursues its old career of efficiency and has derived the greatest benefit from the improvements of arrangement and machinery to which the Council adverted in their last Report The following distinctions have been gained during the past year Booklet and Leeds two of the first Students in the Physical Laboratory obtained Whitworth Scholarships and Perram was the second of the unsuccessful can- didates Robert Scott obtained the 6th place in the Honours Division at the Matriculation Examination ot the University of London Elwes 3d Class in Honours at the First Examination Wilson has been chosen Whitworth Exhibitioner for 1870 In this Department the chair of Geology has been during the last year vacated by the resignation of Professor Tennant who now confines his attention to his own special subject of Mineralogy The Council were fortunate enough to have some distinguished candidates for the post and from among them they have selected Dr Duncan &a an old Student of the College who as Secretary of the Geologi- cal Society and author of much original work on Geological subjects holds most distinguished place in Science and is likely to do honour to the College and to render it good service in this very important subject Mr Abbay the Demon- strator of Natural Philosophy having gained Fellowship at Wadham College Oxford necessitating residence has been
