264 MEDICAL DEPARTMENT The eligibility of each Candidate for the Army Medical Service will be de termined by the result of the examinations in these subjects only Candidates who desire it will be examined in Comparative Anatomy Zoology Natural Philosophy Physical Geography and Botany with special reference to Materia Medica and the number of marks gained in these subjects will be added to the total number of marks obtained in the obligatory part of the Exami- nation by Candidates who shall have been found qualified for admission ard whose position on the list of successful competitors will thus be improved in proportion to their knowledge of these branches of Science After passing this examination every Candidate will be required to attend one entire Course of Practical Instruction at the Army Medical School on- Hygifene Clinical and Military Medicine Clinical and Military Surgery Pathology of Diseases and Injuries incident to Military Service At its conclusion the Candidate will be required to pass an examination on the subjects taught in the School If he give satisfactory evidence of being qualified for the practical duties of an Army Medical Oilicer he will be eligible for Commission as Assistant- Surgeon During the period of his residence at the Army Medical School each Can- didate will receive an allowance of 5s per diem with quarters or 7s per diem without quarters to cover all costs of maintenance and he will be required to provide himself with uniform viz the Regulation undress uniform of an Assistant-Surgeon but without the sword All Candidates will be required to conform to such rules of discipline as the Senate may from time to time enact VII regulations relative to the examination of candidates for the appointment of assistant-surgeon in the royal navy The Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners ofthe Admiralty are pleased to direct fhat the following Regulations relative to the Examination of Can- didates for the Appointment of Assistant-Surgeon in the Royal Navy shall in future be adopted That Candidate for entry into the Royal Navy shall make written appli- cation to that effect addressed to the Secretary of the Admiralty on the receipt of which application he will be furnished with the Regulations and printed form to be filled up by him in accordance with the directions given therein As vacancies occur the number of Candidates required will be ordered to attend at the Admiralty Office on the first Tuesday in alternate months com- mencing with January in each year but it is to be observed that no person can be admitted as an Assistant-Surgeon in the Royal Navy unless he can produce satisfactory evidence that his name has been placed on the Medical Register as legally qualified to practise both Medicine and Surgery according to the regulations established by the Medical Act And further he will be required
