ANNUAL REPORT 51 accepting the resignation the Council expressed their warm and cordial appreciation of his past work in the chaplaincy and they rejoice that they still retain those services from him in connexion with the Theological Department and the Evening Classes which have always done so much to maintain the intellectual moral and religious tone of the College One other resignation the Council have to chronicle The Rev Professor Hall now almost the only representative of the distinguished body of Professors who began the work of King's College has at last felt obliged to resign post in which he has done so much for its reputation and its efficiency not only by his work in his own Mathematical Department but by his general influence upon the whole body The following resolution Hill best express the feelings of the Council It was resolved That the Council cannot accept Professor Hall's resignation without recording in the strongest terms their deep sense of the able and conscientious services which he has rendered to the College for thirty-eight years from the very commencement of its existence as an educational body and of his cordial and loyal co-operation in every effort which has been made for its welfare "They beg to wish him every happiness in the honourable rest which his long course of labour has so well earned and to thank him for his kind expression of continued interest in the progress of the Institution with which he has been so long connected The Council beg to report that they have elected to the office of Principal the Rev Dr Barry ho was formerly Student in the College and subsequently member of Trinity College Cambridge where he took distinguished degree in the year 1848 being Fourth Wrangler Junior Smith's l'rize- man and seventh in the First Class of the Classical Tripos He became soon afterwards Head Master of the Grammar School at Leeds from whence he was elected to the Principal- ship of Cheltenham College Dr Barry's success at the head of both these institutions is well known And the Council think it unnecessary to add more than that he has already 2
