annual report II -Having now finished their Report as to the regular work of the College the Council feel it their duty to refer to some special circumstances of the past year They have to regret the loss by death of three members of their own body Lord Calthorpe Mr Richard Clarke and tbe Rev Ernest Hawkins and the resignations of Sir VV Heath- cote and Mr Waldegrave Leslie in consequence of their leaving town They are sorry also to announce the loss by death of two Honorary Fellows Sir Herbert Edwardes one of the most highly distinguished of our Indian officers fur ability bravery and high character and the Rev FeaRNLBI for thirty four years one of the Masters of King's College School and for many years Viee-Master at the head of the Modern Department Rut more especially they must advert with deep regret to the death of the Visitor of the College the late Archbishop of Canterbury one of whose last appearances in public was at the Distribution of Prizes in July last From his successor who has been so long an active member of their body the Council venture to hope for continued confidence and support While recording these losses the Council are at the same time glad to announce that the present Lord Chancellor has accepted place among their Life Members and to welcome tbe present Bishop of London to his official position on the Board They have gladly accepted Prize Medal to commemorate the name of the late Principal Dr Jelf in each Department given as part of testimonial to him from past and present members and friends of the College and they beg to recom mend his name to the Court of Proprietors for election upon the Council of the Institution which he served so long They have to refer also to the resignation of the office of Chaplain after twenty-two years' tenure by the Rev Professor Plumptre That resignation was given by him in consequence of an opinion which he held strongly and in which the Council could not but concur that much of the duty hitherto done by the Chaplain might with advantage devolve upon th Principal and desire to remove all obstacles from cour which appeared to conduce to the welfare of the College
