40 annual report -In the Medical Department the whole number of Matriculated Students is 140 which represents an increase of 10 over last year the new entries having been 42 as against 31 in 1867 This increase is highly satisfactory as it has taken place notwithstanding an increase in the Fees payable by Medical Students It is gratifying to the Council to be able to announce that during the past year an old Student Mr Marmaduke Lawson has been appointed Professor of Botany in the Univer- sity of Oxford in the room of the late Professor Daubeny Many other honourable distinctions have been gained by King's College Students during the past year at the London University Among the more important of these may be mentioned At Examination Shingleton Smith Gold Medal the most honourable dis- tinction at this Examination At Examination Wm Alsept Richards Gold Medal in Medicine and Gold Medal in Midwifery At First Examination John Curnow Scholarship and Gold Medal in Anatomy and Scholarship and Gold Medal in Materia Medica First Μ Examination Alfred Cotterill Honours in Anatomy Preliminary Scientific Examination Francis Warner Honours in Chemistry and Natural Philosophy William Rose Honours in Botany King's College Hospital has pursued during the past year its career of unwearied energy and extended usefulness The Council have pleasure in once more recording their thanks to the Treasurer Vice-Chairman and Committee of Manage- ment of an Institution so valuable in itself and so essential to the welfare of the Medical School
