ANNUAL REPORT IS to flourish in spite of many influences which have tended to discourage some of the professions which it endeavours to supply The Council feeling its great importance and value have during the past year carried out the intention ex- pressed in their last Report They have at very con- siderable expense rearranged the Lecture Rooms and provided Physical and Chemical Laboratories for practical work which are they believe almost unequalled in the excellency of their scale and arrangements they have resolved on appointing Demonstrator to assist the Professor of Natural Pbilosophy and out of many excellent Candidates have selected Mr Abbay of Exeter College Oxford to fill the post In taking these steps they have had especially in view the great impetus given to Technical Education by the noble provisions of the Whitworth Scholarships and the growing importance of the subject itself The Applied Sciences Department of King's College has long been known as occupying leading position in this special branch of education The Council believe that the steps which they have taken must tend to assure and even strengthen that position and they find an earnest of the fulfilment of the hope in the fact that many Students from without who are preparing to become Candidates for the Whitworth Scholar- ships have already sought in King's College the special instruction which may fit them for the competition Students of this Department have in the course of last year gained the following distinctions in open competition At Oxford Clbminshaw Edward Postmastersbip at Merton for Nat Science ΙιΟΝαβτΑϊϊ Edward Blundell Scholarship For the Engineering Establishment of Public Works in India Perram George James First in order of merit Tanner Thomas Lanfear Upcott Frederick Robert Harvey William In this Department the Council have to announce the retirement of Dr Cook the Demonstrator of Chemistry and the appointment of Mr James Thomson Bottomley in his place
