41 annual report Francis Hummel Open Scholarship at Worcester College Oxford Alfred Gristock Lusby Scholarship at Magdalen Hall Oxford Denwood Harrison 2d Class in Moderations George Disney Jelf 2d Class in Final Schools Law and History It may be indeed said not untruly that the numerical prosperity of this Department has suffered from its own past success It was one of the first Institutions which united to the old Classical teaching the recognition of Modern branches of study its success has therefore tended in no slight degree to produce an extension in the area of instruc- tion at most of the great institutions of the country and so has created rivalry possibly injurious to itself but emi- nently conducive to the general progress of Education But the Council are convinced that under the able and con scientious teaching which it receives it is doing good service and deserving all possible support The Council are glad to call attention to the increase of the Oriental Section providing for gentlemen who have passed the Competitive Examination and are preparing by the subsequent examinations for their future career It already supplies want which was strongly felt and the Council venture to hope that increased encouragement may be given by the Civil Service Commissioners to such institu- tions as provide good instruction and good influences for young men at critical time of life and tend to produce something of the corporate spirit which is so greatly desired in the Indian Civil Service at the present day In the General Literature Department the Council regret to announce that Mr Townshend has been compelled by ill health to resign his Lectureship after six years of valuable and conscientious services which call for their hearty acknowledgments They have appointed in his place Mr Mozley Fellow of King's College Cambridge gentle- man of the very highest University distinction whom they are glad to number among the Staff of the College -The Department of the Apflied Sciences continues
