annual report 43 -It is hardly necessary to dwell upon the proved useful- ness of the Theological Department and the growing importance of such institutions at the present time when the supply of Candidates for Holy Orders hardly keeps pace with the great and increasing demand It is obvious also that the Theological Department of King's College possesses ן advantages only second to those which are the fruit of an University career Its position in London gives it unusual opportunities not only for securing the services of Professors of the highest class but also for making its Students familiar with the direction of Modern Thought and practically acquainted with the duties and the difficulties with which they are likely to meet in the present day And the fact that this Theological Department does not exist in isolation but in close connexion with the other branches of great Institution general in its scope and presenting various forms of teaching and character ί tends in the highest degree to preserve it from any professional narrowness or from devotion to any ecclesiastical party Founded originally with the full sanction and co-operation of the Episcopal Body and sustained by the continued support and confidence of all and especially of the Lord Bishop of London who has practically regarded it as his Diocesan College it has made itself an important place among the Ecclesiastical Institutions of the country The number of Certificated Theological Associates already amounts to 482 and of these 187 were placed in the First Class at the Final Examination The Council feel no doubt that there is still great and useful work before it and that every effort will be made to develope that work so as to meet and to anticipate the requirements of the present time -The Department of General Literature and Science although diminished in number has not fallen off in character or efficiency The following Honours have been gained by old Students during the past year Clifford Fellowship of Trinity College Cambridge Goodwin Scholar of Balliol College Oxford Gaisford Uni- versity Prize for-Greek Verse Latin University Scholarship
