ANNUAL REPORT 49 be long remembered in connexion with his many services both to the College and Hospital It will be proposed to fill up the two vacancies thus occa- sioned with the names of the Rev Dr Currey of the Charter- house and Colonel Ouseley Mr Egerton Vernon Harcourt having expressed his wish to retire from the Council owing to his now residing far away from the College Mr Alexander Beresford-Hope will be proposed in his room During the last year the following former Students have been elected Honorary Fellows of the College William Kingdon Clifford 2d Wrangler and 2d Smith's Prize- man 1367 Burford Waring Gibsone 9th Wrangler 1st in First Class Natural Science Tripos and Third Class in Classical Tripos 1853-4 Henry Humphreys 5th Wrangler 1867 Before they conclude it is the duty of the Council to announce to the Proprietors the approaching resignation of the Rev Jelf Principal of the College who in letter dated December 20 1S67 expressed to them his wish to retire from his office at the close of the present Academical Year The severance of connexion which has lasted nearly twenty-five years must always be painful Nor is it less so in this case than usual In parting with Dr Jelf the Council feel that they lose one to whom the highest interests of King's College have always been dear and who has given his full strength and energies to the promotion of those interests They need hardly say that their good wishes will follow him into his retirement but perhaps their feelings upon the subject will be best described by the following Minute which they have placed upon their records "That in accepting Dr Jelf's resignation the Council express hope that he may enjoy many years of happiness in the retirement which he seeks and which he has well earned by nearly twenty-five years of faithful service in the office of Principal by his courtesy and kindness by his active
