48 ANNUAL REPORT Oxford Dyer William Τ Τ First Class in Natural Science and Second Class in Mathematical Honours Garhod Herbert Baring Proxime ccessit for an Open Scholar- ship at University College and since that Post Mastership at Merton University of London Ltell John Matheson Honours at Matriculation It is with real sorrow and with deep sense of the loss which King's College has sustained that the Council advert to the death of the Bishop of Lichfield In the history of King's College he filled very conspicuous place Prominent amongst its founders he was appointed by the Royal Charter member of the original Council of which he was also the last survivor On the occasion of the illness of the Rev Hugh James Rose in the autumn of 1838 Mr Lonsdale under- took ad interim the Principal's duties and on Mr Rose's death few months afterwards he accepted the vacant office This appointment furnished ample scope for his fine scholarship his aptitude for teaching his sound theology his persuasive preaching as well as for his fatherly interest in the Students and for the exercise of authority tempered by unaffected kindness Called after five years' tenure of office to higher place in the Church Bishop Lonsdale never forgot King's College He was frequent attendant at the Meetings of the Council He often presided at the Annual Distributions of Prizes and never failed on such occasions to utter words of wisdom and kindness which will be long remembered by those who had the privilege of hearing him The Council have resolved to place on the outer wall 01 the Chapel simple Tablet with an inscription commemora- tive of their affection and gratitude towards the third Prin- cipal of King's College London The Council have during the last year sustained another severe loss in the death of Sir Thomas Phillips for many years very active and able member of the Council whose name will
