ANNUAL REPORT 45 The following distinctions have been gained by Students of the Medical Department at the University of London At the Second Examination Robert Stringleton Smith Scholarship and Gold Medal in Midwifery and First Class Honours in Medicine Charles Berrell First Class Honours in Medicine and Midwifery and Third Class Honours in Forensic Medicine At the Examination Charles Kelly the Gold Medal annually awarded to the most distinguished Graduate of the year at the time of the Examination John Thomas Arlidge obtained Marks qualifying for Gold Thomas Claye Shaw Medal But little change has taken place during the past year in the Medical Staff either at the College or Hospital but in order to increase the efficiency of the Clinical instruction at the Hospital the Committee of Management have made arrangements for the more complete treatment of Diseases of the Throat and of Skin Diseases-the former under Dr Johnson the latter under Dr Duffin These arrangements have been attended with much benefit to the Patients and have been considerably appreciated by tbe Students The tenure of office of the three Assistant Surgeons of the Hospital having expired on April 30th in last year the Council in accordance with the new Regulations have ap- pointed two of those Officers Mr John Wood and Mr Henry Smith as permanent Assistant Surgeons The neces- sary retirement of Mr Spencer Watson gave the Council an opportunity of expressing its sense of the valuable services he had rendered to the Hospital during the five years in which he had held the office of Assistant Surgeon The tenure of Dr Playfair's office having also expired the Council have re-appointed him as permanent Assistant Physician for Diseases of Women and Children The Council advert with gratitude to the munificeut Dona- tion on the part of Sambrooke Esq one of their own
