annual report 43 The Theological Department has now been in active operation during twenty-two years-a period amply sufficient to test its capabilities and the degree of its success Founded originally with the full sanction and co-operation of the Episcopal Body of that day it has ever since been honoured with the approbation and confidence of the Bishop3 in sue- cession as well as of Incumbents in search of Curates and it has supplied to many Parishes able and well-trained men labouring it is true under the great disadvantage of not possessing an University degree but with respect to other qualifications not at all inferior to the average of Graduates in Holy Orders The numher of Certificated Theological Associates now amounts to 468 and of these 170 were placed in the First Class at the final examination As the number of new entrances at least counterbalances that of the depar- tures there is good ground for hope that with God's con- tinued blessing due supply of persons thus under training will be kept up for the future The numbers in the Department of General Literature and Science remain about the same as they were when the last Report was issued The number of occasional Students in Classics has increased considerable proportion of the Matriculated Students are devoting themselves to preparation for the India Civil Service Examinations The conduct and industry of the Class have been such as to give satisfaction to the several Professors At the University of Oxford Mr Alfred Goodwin obtained the Senior Balliol Scholarship and Mr Denwood Harrison former Scholar in this Department an Exhibition at Queen's College At the University of Cambridge Mr Henry Barclay Swete has been elected Fellow of Caius College The following Students of this Department were amongst the successful Candidates last year in the competition for the India Civil Service Mackenzie Dalzell Chalmers Charles AViltshire Thomas Sharp Hamilton
