MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 253 VI QUALIFICATIONS AND EXAMINATION OF CANDIDATES FOE COMMISSIONS IN THE ARMT MEDICAL SERVICE Every Candidate desirous of presenting himself for admission to the Army Medical Service must be unmarried and not under twenty-one nor over twenty- eight years of age He must produce certificate from the District Registrar in which the date of birth is stated or if this cannot be obtained an affidavit from one of the parents or other near relative who can attest the date of birth will be accepted He must also produce certificate of moral character from the parochial minister if possible The Candidate must make declaration that he labours under no mental or constitutional disease nor any imperfection or disability that can interfere with the most efficient discharge of the duties of Medical Officer in any climate He must also attest his readiness to engage for general service and to proceed on foreign service when required to do so The Candidate must he registered under the Medical Act of 1858 as licensed to practise Medicine and Surgery in Great Britain or Ireland Certificates of registration character and age must accompany this Schedule when filled up and returned Candidates will be examined by the Examining Board in the following subjects Anatomy and Physiology Surgery Medicine including Therapeutics the diseases of women and children Chemistry and Pharmacy and practical knowledge of drugs The examination in Medicine and Surgery will be in part practical and will include operations on the dead body the application of Surgical apparatus and the examination of Medical and Surgical patients at the bedside The eligibility of each Candidate for the Army Medical Service will be de- termined by the result of the examinations in these subjects only Candidates who desire it will be examined in Comparative Anatomy Zoology Natural Philosophy Physical Geography and Botany with special reference to His physical fitness will be determined by Board of Medical Officers who are required to certify that the Candidate's vision is sufficiently good to enable him to perform any surgical operation without the aid of glasses moderate degree of Myopia would not be considered disqualification provided it did not necessitate the use of glasses during the performance of operations and that no organic disease of the eyes existed Every Candidate must also be free from organic disease of other organs and from constitutional weakness or other disability likely to unfit him for Military Service in any climate
