annual report With the view of subdividing the classes as far as possible and of providing every facility for their growing wants the Council have instituted Professorship of Freehand Drawing The new Professor Glenny Esq will at the same time act as Professor Bradley's assistant in Geometrical Drawing and by this means Drawing will be taught in the afternoon of every week day except Saturday Measures are likewise in progress for more effective individual instruction in the theory and practice of Surveying under Professor Castle The Council regret to state that Maxwell Esq the distinguished Professor of Natural Philosophy has resigned his office They have elected Mr William Grylls Adams Fellow of St John's College Cambridge late Lecturer ou the same subject to the office of Professor The Lectureship thus vacated will not be filled up Professor Adams undertaking to attend five days in the week instead of three and thus to do the whole work unaided The Medical Department continues in common with the other Metropolitan Schools of Medicine to feel the effects of the new regulations of the Examining Bodies for good previous education of Medical Students temporary dimi- nution of numbers was the natural consequence of this salutary measure It is encouraging to find that the number of entrances in the present year is on the increase The conduct and diligence of the Students in this Department as in all others have been as general rule all that could be desired The following distinctions have been gained by Students in the Medical Department during the past year At the University of Cambridge Bradbury Foundation Scholar of Downing College and Second in the 1st Class Natural Science Tripos 1864 At the University of Edinburgh Parsons Gold Medal for Graduation Thesis
