annual report 41 but to the factories and machinery of many eminent engineer- ing or mechanical firms The openings for qualified Students-at home on the Con- tinent in India and elsewhere-are becoming more numerous and attractive so that every encouragement is given to dili- gence in study and steadiness of character The number of new Students in the Medical Department exhibits falling off as compared with last year fact which may be easily explained from the operation of temporary causes No changes of importance have taken place in the Educational Staff during the past year The conduct of the Medical Students has been with one or two exceptions remarkably good and their diligence all that could be de- sired The Council are sure that the Court will hear with satis- faction remarkable instance of the extent to which the reputation of the College has spread and of the opportunities which it offers to industry and honourable ambition Among the successful candidates for the Warneford Scholarship the highest place was gained by Mr Herbert young man of pure African descent who 'born resident in British Guiana heard there of these scholarships and at the age of seven- teen put himself on board ship came to England offered himself as candidate and gained the object for which he had with so much energy competed The following distinctions have been gained by the Students of the Medical Department during the past year At the University of Oxford Dyer William Τ Studentship in Physical Science Christ Church At the University of London Β Preliminary Science Examination Dyer William Τ Honours in Biology Kelly Charles Honours in Chemistry
