41 annual report of another faithful Professor of the College whose appoint- ment dates from its foundation Dr Bernjys Professor of the German Language and Literature For thirty-two years he has occupied this chair to the great advantage of the Students and to the honour of the College There has been no time as yet to supply the vacancy One more name will complete the list of the changes in this Department The Rev Slater has returned to India and the Chair of Hindustani in the Oriental Section thus vacated has been conferred upon Dr Fitz Edward Hall late Anglo- Sanscrit Professor at Benares The Department of the Applied Sciences continues full the progress of the Students has been satisfactory and their conduct with some few exceptions good In the Military Section Charles Douglas Gordon and Richard Henry elf obtained respectively the Sixteenth and Seventh places in the competitive examination for entrance into the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich The Medical Department remains nearly the same in point of numbers fact which is the more satisfactory be- cause the new regulations of the College of Surgeons and of Apothecaries' Hall for the promotion of good previous edu- cation of Medical Students have more or less affected for time the condition of most of the Medical Schools The Students of this Department will bear comparison in point of subordi- nation and diligence with those of any other part of the College They have obtained many distinctions in the Uni- versity of London At the Second examination Gooding Ralph Honours in Animal Physiology At Matriculation Dyer William Ī¤ Prize in Chemistry At the Preliminary Scientific Examination Berrell Charles Honours in Chemistry &c Powles Revett Coleridge Honours in Biology
