annual report 43 At the University of Cambridge Bolton William Henry Besant Frank Wranglers Eldkrton William Alexander Austin George 1st Class Moral Science Tripos Tovey Duncan Crooke Foundation Scholarship Clifford William Kingdon Minor Scholarship nm f' Humphreys Henby Minor Scholarship St John'3 At the University of London Humphreys Henry Honours in Mathematics at Matriculation The Section of Oriental Literature the institution of which was announced in last year's Report has now been in opera- tion for about year and its work is about to be tested for the first time at the approaching examination for definitive appointments in the India Civil Service There seems every probability Athat several of the Students will pass with credit The Court of Proprietors will share the regret with which the Council regard the resignation of the Chair of Classical Language and Literature by Archdeacon Browne in conse- quence of professional promotion By his able discbarge of his duties during no less period than twenty-seven years by his high and elegant Scholarship by the firmness of his dis- cipline tempered by his kind frank and conciliating manners Professor Browne had won the respect and affection of many generations of Scholars who owed their subsequent success in life to his training He is succeeded by one bearing name ן reverenced in the College and one fully competent to carry on to the highest perfection the work begun by his prede- cessor the Rev Lonsdale Fellow of Balliol Simultaneously with Professor Browne's resignation the Classical Staff of this department suffered great loss in the retirement of Rev Daniel Lecturer in Classics in consequence of his being summoned to accept the Tutorship of Worcester College of which he is Fellow The vacant office has been conferred upon Townsend Esq Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge The Council have to record with great regret the retirement
