46 annual report "bridge The Council heartily congratulate the Court on this the first sum which has been left to them for the benefit of this most important Department of the College In the Department of the Evening Classes whilst there has been an inconsiderable diminution in the number of occa- sional Students that of the Matriculated Students has slightly increased The assiduity and progress of the Students in all the different subjects are unabated notwithstanding the many difficulties which late hours long distances and wearied facul- ties necessarily interpose As test of the spirit which ani- mates this department it may be mentioned that the average number voluntarily attending the Chaplain's admirable lectures on the Life and Teaching of Christ has been 150 The Associateship which many have obtained in the past year continues to be great object of ambition In no part of the College indeed has the Collegiate feeling been more healthily or practically developed and none of our Students are more alive to the great advantages they enjoy Those advantages are certainly becoming every year more manifest The primary object with which most persons enter the Evening Class Department is the general cultivation of their faculties by the wise employment of their leisure but in following this impulse many are led on to pursue new lines of life hitherto unlooked for or supposed to be out of their reach Some accordingly transfer themselves after short time to other departments such as the Theological and the Medical others obtain appointments in Her Majesty's Civil Service &c and not few are taking their degrees or are matriculating in the Universities of Oxford Cam- bridge or London The Council are happy in concluding this account of the several Departments to bear testimony to the general good conduct and diligence which characterise the Students and Pupils The Court of Proprietors will fully sympathise with the
