ANNUAL REPORT 43 ment at the Royal Academy at Woolwich has to the great regret of the Council resigned the office of Lecturer in Geometrical Drawing in which capacity he had for two years ably seconded the distinguished Professor his father The Rev Edgar late Lieutenant has been appointed in his place Mr Thomas Sutton having resigned the office of Lecturer in Photography has been succeeded by George Dawson Esq The Medical Department is in highly satisfactory state and no changes of any importance have taken place during the year very important regulation has been promulgated by the Medical Council of England which is likely to cause great modifications in the whole system of Medical training In and after October next every Medical Student will have to produce certificate of having passed preliminary Arts Examination before he can be allowed to register at the Royal College of Physicians at the Royal College of Surgeons or at Apothecaries' Hall as having commenced his professional education The said certificate may be gained at either of the Medical Colleges or at the Hall or else in the Senior Middle Class Examination of Oxford or Cambridge or at the Matri- culation Examination of the University of London The effect of this most wise improvement will be to stimulate or rather to necessitate that previous education of Medical Students which King's College has kept steadily in view and to encourage which was the avowed object of the late Dr Warneford in founding his first-class Scholarships It is remarkable that the number of Candidates for that Scholar- ship last October was unprecedently large evidently in aiitici- pation of the impending regulation Mr Henry Finden has obtained the Gold Medal for Botany open to general competition at Apothecaries' Hall and Mr Revett Powles was placed in the First Class for Botany at the Matriculation Examination of the University of London The chief events at King's College Hospital during the
