42 ANNUAL REPORT of Manufacturing Art The education of these men ought not to be left to chance or to individual caprice or to vague desultory efforts Their true education is to be found in all the concentrated appliances of the Collegiate system guided by wisdom and experience and sanctified by Christian prin- ciple Here accordingly the Student learns the scientific principles on which all excellence in the practical work of his future calling will depend and being early initiated into the practical details of professional work he applies at once the principles he has learnt glance at the Time Table and at the Syllabus of the respective Lectures printed in the Calendar will give some idea of the actual work done in these Classes It seems certain that the very existence of such training is unknown in quarters where its value would be most fully appreciated In the Military Section of this Department Messrs Ollivant Richard Wace and Elliott Wood have gained appointments as Gentlemen Cadets in the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich as the result of competitive exami- nation and Mr Francis Mascall of the Civil Section and Scholar in the Department gained the like distinction Since the last Report vacancy has oocurred in the Professor- ship of the Arts of Construction by the lamented death of Professor Hosking who had held office for twenty-one years The Council esteem themselves fortunate in having secured the services of Robert Kerr Esq as successor to the Chair Mr Andrew Moseley who had assisted Professor Hosking as Lecturer in this subject for twenty years retired from office on his death The Council have elected bim an Honorary Fellow as token of their appreciation of his valuable services The increase of numbers in the Department has made it necessary to lighten the labours of the Professor of Natural Philosophy and the Council have appointed Smalley Esq for seven years the able Mathematical Master in King's College School to be the first Lecturer in Natural Philosophy Mr Bradley having obtained Government Appoint-
