annual report 41 term of Oriental Languages and Literature to select and specify five of the principal languages of India and entrust them to three separate Professors The new Chairs thus constituted have been filled accordingly that of Sanscrit and Bengali by the distinguished Librarian of the India House James Ballantyne Esq LL that of Hindustani by the Rev Slater formerly Worsley Scholar of this College and subsequently Missionary in India on that Foundation author of three works in Hindustani and late Senior Professor teaching Hindustani at Bishop's College Calcutta and that of Tamil and Telugu by Thomas Howley Esq The Council at the same time paid well-merited compliment to Mr Leitner Lecturer in Arabic by pro- moting him to the rank of Professor in that language The Council anticipate the best results from this more definite and comprehensive scheme of Oriental Studies par- ticularly so soon as an increase of Lecture Rooms shall admit of its complete organization It will afford immediate facilities to those gentlemen who having passed the first examination for the Civil Service of India have to prepare for second ordeal including one of the Indian Languages and it may be expected that ere long numerous Class may be constituted from amongst those who are destined not only for Missionary work in India but also for general employment in that country such as Military and Naval Officers Merchants Engineers and Medical Men In the Department of the Applied Sciences the retro- spect of the past year is highly encouraging The late increase in the number of its Students has suffered no abate- ment and its reputation is steadily advancing In an age which may be justly characterised as the age of material progress unwearied private enterprise and gigantic public works such an Institution as this Department becomes matter of public necessity There is arising large class of young men who are destined for commercial pursuits or for professional employment such as Civil and Military En- gineering Surveying Architecture and the higher branches
