40 annual report The Theological Department keeps up its numbers and its efficiency Since its foundation in 1846 it has sent forth 330 Certificated Students of whom 130 were placed in the First Class at the final Examinations The Class of Candi- dates continues to furnish recruits in succession to the Entrance Examination During the last year the old Pupils and friends of the Very Rev the Dean of Westminster have placed in the hands of the Council the sum of 156 as the commencement of an Endowment Fund for an Annual reek Testament Prize in memory of Dr Trench's connexion with the Theological Department as first Professor of the Exegesis of the New Testament It is hoped that many additions will be made to this fund The Department of General Literature and Science maintains its place as one of the most important parts of the College and as offering not only thorough preparation for the Universities and for the Civil Service of India but also as place of Education final and complete in itself At the University of Oxford Mr Η Weitbrecht has gained an open Scholarship at Corpus Christi College At the University of Cambridge Messrs Taylor Clowes Fynes-Clintou and Cherrill were Wranglers in the last Ma- thematical Tripos At the University of London Mr Kingdon Clifford Scholar of this College obtained honours in Mathematics at Matriculation Mr John Read Daniel has been successful in the Com- petitive Examination for the India Civil Service Dr Duncan Forbes having resigned the office of Professor of Oriental Languages and Literature the Council have marked their appreciation of his services during twenty-four years by electing him an Honorary Fellow of the College Bearing in mind the vast and growing importance of the relations between this country and her Majesty's Indian dominions the Council have taken this opportunity to divide the vacant Professorship and instead of continuing the vague
