62 theological department Section VI advice to students The following Suggestions have been drawn up for the use of Students in Theology at King's College London It is hoped that they will help them to make profitable use of their time during the period of their attendance and guide them in the continuance of their studies afterwards Note-taking -Students are recommended not to attempt verbatim report of Lectures The note-book should record faithfully the substance of all that the Lecturer has said and in particular all references for future use To attempt more will commonly lead to failure If successful the Student will find that the mass of notes which he thus accumulates will demand an undue proportion of his time II Note-books -It is advisable to start with separate note- books for each subject and to write on one page only at each opening The notes of College Lectures ought to be made nucleus round which the student may gather the results of his own reading on the same subject and the blank page gives him the opportunity of entering in their right place the references or quotations that are necessary for this pur- pose quarto or octavo size will be found most useful Distinctness of writing and arrangement so that single glance may show the contents of each page is of importance and this may be promoted by running marginal analysis III Rehding -Students are reminded that Lectures are intended to guide not to supersede their labours in reading and thinking for themselves Those who confine themselves to the study of their own notes will probably fail however painstaking to get from the Lectures the knowledge which they were meant to give The following List of Books is accordingly recommended to the Theological Students of King's College as containing those most likely to be helpful to them The letters and Î’ indicate respectively in each subject what books the Student should if possible get for
